Nikšić, Kapino Waterfalls, and Lake Krupac

Montenegro's second city brews the national beer, hides a waterfall in the forest, and offers a glacial swimming lake — all within an hour of the capital.

Why Nikšić is Worth a Day

Nikšić is Montenegro's second-largest city, but it feels nothing like Podgorica. It sits on a broad plateau ringed by mountains, with a climate that is noticeably cooler and greener. The city is best known for Nikšićko pivo — the pale lager that appears on every bar counter and restaurant table in the country. The Trebjesa brewery has been producing it since 1896 and the original brewery complex is open to visitors.

Beyond the beer, Nikšić offers three things that make a full day trip from Podgorica genuinely worthwhile: the Kapino Waterfalls in the forest south-west of town, Lake Krupac where half of northern Montenegro swims in summer, and the Bedem fortress overlooking the old town. Together they make a varied day that combines food, nature, and history.

Trebjesa Brewery

The Trebjesa brewery sits on a hill above the city centre, surrounded by parkland. The original 19th-century buildings — stone walls, red-tile roofs, industrial chimney — are still standing and now house a visitor experience alongside the modern production facility. Brewery tours run on weekdays and include a tasting session. Even without a tour, the brewery terrace is worth a visit — cold Nikšićko beer poured directly from the source, with views across the plateau to the Lukavica mountains.

Kapino Waterfalls

The Kapino Waterfalls are located about 6 km south-west of Nikšić centre, along a side road through mixed forest. The main cascade drops roughly 10 metres into a rocky pool surrounded by beech and oak trees. A short walking trail leads from the parking area to the falls — about 15 minutes through shaded woodland. The setting is peaceful and rarely crowded; on a weekday you may have it entirely to yourself. Swimming in the pool is possible but the water is cold even in high summer.

Lake Krupac

Lake Krupac sits 5 km north of Nikšić centre. It is a small, clear, glacially-fed lake surrounded by flat grassland and backed by mountains. In summer, it becomes the main outdoor swimming and picnic spot for the entire region. The water warms to a comfortable temperature by late June. There are no formal facilities — just grass, water, and mountains. Bring your own food and a towel. The lake is especially beautiful in late afternoon light when the surrounding peaks turn golden.

Bedem Fortress

The Bedem fortress overlooks the old part of Nikšić from a rocky promontory. Originally Roman, expanded by the Ottomans, and now partially restored, the walls offer a panoramic view across the Nikšić plateau. The climb takes about 15 minutes from the town centre. In summer the fortress hosts occasional concerts and cultural events. At any time of year, the 360-degree view from the ramparts — flat agricultural plain in the foreground, mountains stacking up in every direction — justifies the short climb.

Combining with Ostrog

The road between Podgorica and Nikšić passes the turnoff for Ostrog Monastery at roughly the halfway point. This makes it easy to visit both in a single day: Ostrog in the morning, Nikšić in the afternoon. See our full guide to driving to Ostrog Monastery.

Practical Tips

  • Fuel: Fill up in Nikšić if continuing north to Durmitor. It is the last reliable fuel stop.
  • Swimming: Lake Krupac has no lifeguards or facilities. Bring everything you need.
  • Food: Try ćevapi at one of the grill houses on the main street. Nikšić portions are famously generous.
  • Time needed: A full day covers brewery, waterfalls, lake, and fortress comfortably.
