Before You Go

Altitude, border docs, snow chains, the stuff guidebooks skip.

A valid driving licence, your passport or national ID, and a payment method for the deposit in the lead driver's name. Cash is accepted on most cars, with credit card, debit card or crypto depending on the vehicle. Licences without Latin characters also require an International Driving Permit.

Yes, and Podgorica is the natural launchpad for it: Hani i Hotit on the Albanian frontier is roughly 30 km east, and the inland highways toward Serbia and Kosovo open up directly from the capital ring road. Cross-border charges are tiered. Tier 1 covers neighbouring countries excluding Albania and Kosovo, suited to a quick run up to Trebinje in Bosnia or a hop to Croatia via Debeli Brijeg. Tier 2 adds Albania and Kosovo, the right pick for a Shkodër weekend or a Prizren detour. Tier 3 is the multi-country Balkans circuit that strings Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and beyond into one trip, exactly the loop renters often build out of TGD. Flag the countries during booking so the Green Card and the matching tier are sorted before you collect the keys.

All vehicles include third-party liability insurance. CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) starts at the paid Basic tier and is chosen at booking. VAT, the mandatory equipment kit (first aid, warning triangle, reflective vest), and a clearly stated fuel policy are all included. Mileage terms vary by vehicle and are shown before booking. Zero-excess upgrades are available as an add-on.

Podgorica Airport (TGD) is a compact single-terminal building, arrivals are straightforward. Our agent meets you in the arrivals hall holding a board with your name. The car is parked just outside the terminal. From wheels-down to driving away typically takes under 10 minutes.

Three child seat formats are bookable, infant, toddler and booster, fitted before handover so you can buckle in straight at the TGD kerb. A Winter Pack pairs winter tyres with chains for January through March renters running the inland route up to Kolašin or Žabljak, where the Smokovac to Mateševo motorway gets you onto the snowline fast. Personal Accident Insurance is the one to weigh for the Morača Canyon and the Ostrog cliff-face approach, both narrow, both unforgiving. Theft Protection layers on top of CDW for longer multi-country trips. For connectivity, a wireless hotspot or a local SIM card both solve the no-roaming problem the moment you walk out of TGD arrivals. Ski rack and snowboard rack ship together with the Žabljak weekenders, a roof rack handles the bulkier hauls. And for darting through Stara Varoš lanes when the car is parked, an electric scooter with charger is on the list.

Free cancellation is available on selected cars rather than across the whole fleet, and the cars that carry it are flagged in the search results. The notice period varies by category, and a payment processing fee applies to cancellations.

Deposit requirements at TGD vary between zero and €300 depending on the vehicle tier. The deposit is taken at pickup; cash is accepted on most cars, and where a credit card is required it must be a physical card (not debit or prepaid) in the main driver's name, and is fully released once the car is returned undamaged. The exact amount for your chosen vehicle is shown in the booking summary.

From November to March, snow chains or winter tyres are legally required on mountain roads above 1,000 m in Montenegro. This includes the road to Žabljak and Durmitor National Park. If you're heading into the mountains in winter, let us know at booking and we'll equip the car accordingly. Also note: Nikšić is the last reliable fuel stop before Durmitor, fill up there.
