Why Route Choice Matters
Podgorica Airport (TGD) sits 12 km south of the city centre on the Zeta plain. From here, the Adriatic coast is between 1 and 2.5 hours away depending on your destination and the route you choose. Unlike the coast airports at Tivat, TGD requires a proper drive through mountains or along the lake — and the route you pick can make the difference between a smooth transfer and an unexpectedly dramatic mountain crossing.
There are four main routes to the coast. Each reaches a different stretch of the Adriatic, and each has a distinct character. None is objectively best — the right choice depends on where you are heading, what time you land, and whether you want the fastest road or the most scenic.
Route 1: Podgorica to Budva via Sozina Tunnel
This is the fastest route to the central Montenegrin coast. Take the E65 south from the airport, follow signs for Bar/Sozina, and enter the Sozina tunnel — a 4.2 km bore through the coastal mountains that emerged in 2005 and cut the Podgorica-to-coast journey in half. After the tunnel, turn right towards Petrovac and follow the coastal road north to Budva. Total driving time is about 1 hour 15 minutes. The tunnel toll is €3.50 per car. The road after the tunnel descends through olive groves and Mediterranean hillside before reaching the coast at Petrovac.

Route 2: Podgorica to Bar via Lake Skadar
This route follows the E65 south past the western shore of Lake Skadar through Virpazar, then continues to Bar on the coast. The total drive takes about 1 hour. The Lake Skadar section is scenic and worth stopping for — especially around Virpazar. If you land in the morning and are not in a rush, this route combines your coast transfer with the country's best lake scenery. See our full Lake Skadar guide.
Route 3: Podgorica to Kotor via Cetinje
This is the longest but most dramatic route. Drive to Cetinje (35 minutes), then descend to the coast via the old mountain road through Njeguši village and down the famous hairpin bends to the Bay of Kotor. The descent from the mountains to sea level takes about 45 minutes of concentrated driving on narrow switchbacks with staggering views. Total journey time is 1.5 to 2 hours. This route is not recommended for nervous mountain drivers or those arriving at night — the hairpins have no lighting.
The Sozina Tunnel: What to Know
The Sozina tunnel is the fastest way through the coastal mountain range. It is well-lit, ventilated, and has two lanes (one in each direction). The toll is €3.50 and is payable in cash (euros) or by card at the booth. The tunnel is occasionally closed for maintenance — check before departing if you are on a tight schedule. On the far side, the road immediately begins descending towards the coast through olive-tree hillside.
Practical Tips
- Timing: Allow extra time if landing in summer evening — the Sozina and Cetinje routes can back up on Friday and Saturday evenings.
- Tolls: Sozina tunnel is the only toll on any coast route — €3.50 per car. Keep cash handy.
- Fuel: Fill up near the airport or in Podgorica. Fuel stations are less frequent on mountain routes.
- Night driving: Sozina route is well-lit throughout. The Cetinje–Kotor mountain road has no lighting — avoid after dark.
